In an effort to promote the California Office of Traffic Safety’s annual anti-DUI efforts, our team worked hard to coordinate and staff a media tour of six college campuses throughout California. The tour, “Don’t Just DD. DDVIP,” intended to create a dialogue about rewarding those who choose to be the designated sober driver for their friends. It also aimed to educate and create public awareness about the dangers of driving while impaired, while showcasing OTS’ increasingly popular mobile app for designated drivers – DDVIP.

Months of planning and preparation came to life as the tour kicked off at Sacramento State, where we partnered with La Mex Taqueria and Drewski’s food trucks to hook students up with free lunch just for downloading the DDVIP app. Giving the students free lunch allowed them to see how being the designated sober driver can be a coveted role, and gave them a taste of just how the DDVIP app can reward them for choosing that role.

From Sacramento State, we continued on the tour to University of California Berkeley, University of the Pacific, University of California San Diego, California State University Northridge and ended with California State University San Marcos. While it certainly kept the team on their toes, we were able to reach over 160,000 students between the six colleges, and educate them on the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Unfortunately, in 2014, 28.6 percent of all roadway fatalities were due to driving while impaired. Our efforts were widely received and we hope to have made a mark on these students and help them change their behaviors.

In addition to the free lunches, our events also included a chance to win a VIP concert experience in Los Angeles, a fun prize wheel with goodies such as Starbucks cards and gift cards, and tons of freebies like water bottles, tote bags and hand sanitizer.
